In the Spotlight: Lulu!

This news segment is fully dedicated to put a designer in the spotlight. We've asked them about themselves, their creations, their process and their inspirations. This spotlight is for and by Lulu.!

Let's introduce!

Hi, my name is Lulu, I’m a 1.0 Gosu OG, was very excited when I heard about the news of Gosu returning in 2022, it was a huge part of my childhood and I always held out hope for it maybe returning some day. I’ve been designing since January of 2024, I remember hating designing on 1.0 but I decide to give it another try now that I’m more experienced with digital art, and it actually turned out good enough for me to want to continue.

My design inspiration has always been very all over the place, picking and choosing from the things I like. I started out with a very fantasy style but nowadays I do also dabble in more streetstyle. Snow Bunny was my very first design and I think she is a very good example of my design style as a whole. Very strong theme, seasonal, huge sleeves, cute skirt, some fantasy vibes. Meanwhile I’d call Strawberry Cow the beginning of my 2nd design era, more streetstyle leaning, bigger focus on different textures, but still a very strong theme ‘cause that’s what I love. And I’d dare to call my post-Tier3 designs my 3rd design era, hopefully it feels as fruitful as the past 2.

Design process and inspiration

I’d call my design process extremely chaotic. I browse Pinterest a lot for inspiration (As most of us probably do) and the most random pictures can inspire me. For example Orange Cow got inspired by a picture of a shirt and bikini top layered the way it’s in the design. Nothing else about the picture is similar to the design, just the way the clothes were layered, and I wanted to make an outfit with that kind of layering. My mushroom design, in addition to just wanting to make a mushroom hat, got inspired by this super pink frilly outfit with huge sleeves. None of that inspiration made it to the final design, but that’s where it started. Other times I just want to make one specific item and then the design just builds around it, for example for my Froggy design I just wanted to make a huge mushroom umbrella right after making the Mushroom hat design (Honestly with how popular mushrooms are, I’m genuinely surprised nobody else thought to make a mushroom umbrella before me).

My designs also have a habit of becoming way bigger than what they started as. I usually start with 1-3 items I want to make, and at the end I have 14+ items. I’ve even had to split some designs in half because of the item limit (Like my Dango designs or the Zombie Sharkie and Jiangshi)

I’m a very inspiration motivated artist. So if a design stops inspiring me, there is a chance I’ll just drop it and start something new. Which is not a very great trait to have while working with a system that rewards releasing new items as soon as possible. Which is why now that I’ve reached Tier3 I’ve decided to take a more relaxed approach to designing. No more weekly grind. Instead, I want to focus on pushing myself outside the box and learning new things with each design. Which is already happening with the event design I submitted right after Halloween, I really pushed myself with that one and tried many new things. I don’t want to spoil it so hopefully you can see it soon in a competition!

My tip would be to just have fun and experiment with different things. Nothing more satisfying than trying something new and it turning out better than you could’ve expected.

Past, Present and Future

I’ve always been extremely bad at picking favorites, but I do have to highlight SnowBunny and Lilypad because they were the original designs, they really nailed my style right from the start and they’ve held up extremely well. I’m also extremely proud of my mushroom hat and umbrella, they were extremely intimidating to start because I had a very specific vision for them, but they turned out amazing and I wouldn’t change a thing.

For a ‘lil sneak peek of my future design, can you smell it? The scent of freshly baked gingerbread cookies is in the air. As the season of Christmas nears, so does the festive spirit and I hope to contribute to it with my own creations, first of which is this slightly pose changing gingerbread cookie tray.

Thank you for reading my (possibly long) yappings about myself and my designs. And even bigger thank you to everyone who keeps buying and supporting my designs!! I hope to keep living up to expectations and I hope my designs keep bringing happiness to y’all! I love seeing the creative outfits made with my designs and hopefully my new designs keep inspiring that.
