In the Spotlight: Mommy!

This news segment is fully dedicated to put a designer in the spotlight. We've asked them about themselves, their creations, their process and their inspirations. This spotlight is for and by Mommy!

Let's introduce!

Hi, I’m mommy! You might’ve seen me comment on your friends fmb posts, shitpost in everything else or maybe even go feral in a bingo or two. If it’s the latter, my deepest condolences. The person you’ve experienced is not my usual kind, sexy and humble self. However, I won’t be pulling out my ukulele and give you a full blown YouTube apology right now, so let’s get into what this really is about.

Painting has always been a hobby of mine, acrylic and graphite are my ride or dies. Digital drawing however? That’s a whole new world. It’s crazy how money motivates you.. Jk (mostly), but the truth is that the only reason I started digital drawing is all thanks to the community shop and I absolutely love it. Nothing makes me happier than seeing people rock my items and creating looks with them!

I joined gsm when I was 8 years old, in 2008, and was an avid user of the design tool. Although the outcome wasn't pretty, it definitely sparked an interest. And speaking of sparks.. by the age of 10, gSm also ignited my love for being a menace in the forums, which is how I ended up with my very first IP ban in 2010. So in a way, gsm gave me two career paths: graphic design or becoming a VPN prodigy before I even hit middle school. (jokes, unless…)

Design process and inspiration

I design on my PC using a mouse, again, please don't make me bring out my ukelele. I tried switching to a drawing pad about a month ago, but they just don't hit the same way.

The real time-thief for me is finding inspiration. I’ll scroll through enough material to make Pinterest think I’m planning a wedding, a move, and a personality change, all at once. I get heavily influenced by JDs and community designers - Ssonder, Ellie, Auxiliary, Mikah, and Martine come to mind right away. What I Think makes them stand out so much is their original style of designing - you can easily tell who made what just from seeing an item. True icons. I always try locating the original source of whatever inspiration I've found. This way, I can not only keep track of which sources I use, but also gather even more inspiration from similar items made by the same creator/shop.

Once it's time to draw, I usually start out with shaping the item, often in a pastel colour as I've found it works very well when recoloring the items. Next I do the smaller details, like belts or pockets, this makes it easier to map out how much space I have left for the rest of the items. Then I do outlines as well as decide where I want the lightest and darkest shades to hit. I finish the design off with shading.

HOT TIP! Pixel design is very different to drawing on a paper as we only have a limited amount of pixels to work with. If you're unsure of where to place the pixels - examine other designers way of doing it! There's a lot of tutorials out there. This is NOT me telling you to copy anyone, but rather gather inspiration from other artists and design it in your own way. Look, learn, remix. (- Pitbull, probably.)

Past, present and future!

SNEAK PEEK!! If the stars align, this design will be in the shop by the end of the week. I wasn't originally going to do a halloween-themed design, but seeing all the halloween WIPs I just had to. I'm so excited about this one, it's just SO me. If you have to know anything about me it's that i'm a sucker for a *** halloween fit.

I still do consider myself new to pixel art. However, one thing I have learnt throughout my years of drawing is that you need to TAKE YOUR TIME. Unless there's an important deadline you have to reach, you have all the time in the world (ish). You dont have to finish something just because you've been working on it forever, and I say this while sitting infront of a painting that I've put on hold for about 2 years.

I’m no lifestyle guru, but my username is Mommy - so legally you have to listen when I say: don’t put unnecessary stress on yourself. Drink some water, straighten up your shrimp-looking-back and if you fail, just pretend that I grounded you until you take a break.
